The forest is the finish line.

For more than 50 years, runners have come to the Rennsteig—the ancient ridge trail through the Thuringian Forest—to test themselves against one of Germany’s great long-distance traditions.

You don’t have to run the whole thing.

Choose your own version of the Rennsteig: enter the race, walk or Nordic walk a shorter distance, or simply spend the day in the forest and experience the atmosphere around the finish.

The point isn’t the time on the clock. It’s being out here, moving through the landscape that has drawn people to this ridge for generations.

Fixed Points

GutsMuths-Rennsteiglauf · mid-May each year

  • Choose the version that fits: the 21.4 km half marathon, 20.9 km Nordic Walking Tour, 17.6 km walk, 42.2 km marathon or 73.9 km supermarathon.

  • The race is held on a Saturday in mid-May and the date shifts each year, so confirm it for the year you travel before planning the ending.

  • The forest routes converge on the celebrated finish in Schmiedefeld am Rennsteig; register directly once you have chosen your distance.

Planning the ending

  • The starts are early and several hours from Berlin, so this version needs a night in the Thuringian Forest before race day rather than a same-day departure from Wilmina.

  • If you do not enter an event, spend race day around Schmiedefeld and the finish to experience the forest, the runners and the atmosphere.

The final scene is yours to choose.
